If you are getting to the stage where you think that your credit card debt is starting to each a level that you may no longer can sustain, the first thing that you may do want to do is take out one of the 0% balance transfer deals that will save you a small fortune in interest rates and with the average amount to be transferred sitting at £3,527, 23% up on this time in April of last year, then this seems to be the preferred choice, either to a 0% deal or to a credit card that has a lower interest rate, than the credit card that you currently own.
But before you go down this road, always make sure that the credit card that you are about to switch too, is the card that suits your needs and not just a short gap to cut your debt in the short term.
For example, it is only a trait of our nature that if we see a credit card that will offer us a 0% interest charge, this will immediately be an attractive proposition and will turn our head away from a credit card that will still be charging an APR from the moment that you buy into the credit card. But you have to be patient and weigh up the pros and cons of each individual card, to make sure that the card is right for YOU!
We can be lulled into a false sense of security when it comes to 0% credit card deals and with the markets changing all the time the 0% deals are not quite as advantageous as they have been, as the 0% period that they are now offering dropping from 9 months to a year, down to 6-9 months and what with more and more credit card issuers charging fees to balance transfers and then the added burden of the higher rate of interest when the 0% period ends, could make for quite an expensive change.
You may also say to yourself that if you think that you may not be able to ay the balance off on the credit card, and then it is only the simple matter of jumping on to the next 0% deal, this might be the case, but what happens if your brain has a leave of absence and you forget to have your next 0% credit card lined up, before the current card runs out? The answer to that you should already know and the reason for taking out the 0% credit card will be eclipsed by the interest charges that you will find yourself now paying.
These credit cards have to be watched liked a hawk and the sooner you take your eyes off of them they will swoop and bleed you dry. They have to be treated with due care and attention to make them do what you wanted the credit card for in the first place, to get the debt down and not to add to it, which will only mean the debt trap will tighten it’s grip on your life.
